Dr. Emerson Lombardo completed her undergraduate students at Cornell University in New York. She earned her doctoral degree from Yale University. She joined the Boston University School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology in 2001 as an Adjunct Research Assistant Professor. Dr. Emerson Lombardo is an investigator with the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Center.
Research Interests
Dr. Emerson Lombardo’s research interests are focused on Alzheimer’s disease and she is also an expert in organizing interdisciplinary and multicultural project teams and facilitating collegial, collaborative innovative efforts in research, education, and public policy. Dr. Emerson Lombardo’s research interests include interventions for frail elders and caregivers, educational programs, surveys and policy analyses on mental health issues of the elderly, and evaluations using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In recent years she has worked with colleagues to develop and propose lifestyle interventions for both treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.
At present, Dr. Emerson Lombardo serves as the primary investigator
for BEST (Brain Enhancement Strengthening Treatment study), a research
study aimed at identifying specific biomarkers for dementia and(2) a
national policy study of dementia caregiver interventions, all of
which involve education, skills training and counseling for family
caregivers. Her current primary effort is leading the development of
the Memory Preservation Diet, and a Nutritional Intervention for
Persons with Early Alzheimer’s disease, working with colleagues from a
variety of disciplines at Tufts University, Boston University, West
Virginia University and University of South Florida. The plan is to
1) test these dietary interventions in randomized clinical trials for
persons with early stage AD who are already stabilized on current AD
to reduce risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Awards and Memberships
Dr. Emerson Lombardo is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, Alzheimer’s Association, National Board of Directors; 1997 Honoree for Exceptional Service to the Alzheimer’s Association and people with Alzheimer’s disease, Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern Massachusetts; Hsieh Award for success in collaborating with the Asian community developing the Asian Caregiving Conference. Boston,1996; Public Service Award, 2003, from Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center, Boston, MA; and the Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board awards at Cornell University. She is a member of the Gerontological Society of America, the American Society on Aging, Alzheimer’s Disease International and the International Academy of Nutrition and Aging.
